Before exploring these sources I honestly knew nothing about algorithms, what they meant, or how they functioned (aside from some math). Learning that there’s only two things required for an algorithm to work, data and a definition of success, almost anything can be an algorithm. However, a rising issue with algorithms is bias. As humans we are all bias whether it’s blatant or unconscious, and sometimes those bias are displayed in the algorithms we create.
One of the biggest issues in algorithms the lack of diversity. We see the largest number of these issues in things like google searches and…
There’s no doubt that all across the world, but especially in the United States that there is a significant gap in our technological age. Some say it’s accessibility, some say it’s race, and some even consider it to be a socioeconomic issue. Personally, I believe it is all, and more. Money is a huge issue when it comes to internet access. Many companies wont install in places where they believe they will not receive enough business. The price of internet (and installation) has also been on rise. Many parents in today’s society are forced to choose between providing for their…
Perhaps the most widely known fact, and widely unknown fact, about data privacy is that nothing you do is really private. Now a days, any activity a human does can be tracked or recorded which includes everything from being on different apps on your phone to watching tv to brushing your teeth and how you drive. There are even ways for your personal romantic life to be tracked through technology. As a personal belief, humans are creating a target out of themselves from big technology companies by carelessly sharing information about themselves. As a population, we have the ability to…
Allowing autonomous cars with no human driver behind the wheel has been a controversial topic for a few years now. As in most topics like this, there’s both pros and cons. At first, the thought of a total self driven car seems insane, unreal, and out of hand, however, we are much closer to that than we think. In the article “29 Must-Know Self Driving Statistics” author Raj Vardhman discusses how as technology is increasing, by 2025 (in 4 years) North America is predicted to own the highest percentage of self driving vehicles in the world at 29%. Of course…
My name is Abby McCoy and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am 4th year student at WOU this year. Online learning is not forte, but I am getting more successful at it. I struggle with online classes because I am a highly visual learner. I struggle to interpret and adapt from just reading material. I need to be able to physically work on something or watch something to form connections. I dislike busy work and I am a full time essential employee which often leads to me becoming overwhelmed with scheduling.
